So, without further ado, here’s our interview with the amazing, the talented, the much-respected, Liz.
Take us back to the beginning. What made you desperately want to get into photography?
When I was little, my father gave me the best gift ever—a camera. I took it everywhere with me. I found so much happiness in hopping on my 10-speed with my best friend and riding down to the lake where I’d snap tons of pictures. In high school, I took a photography class, and that was when I was truly hooked. That’s also when I got into Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, and Richard Avedon’s work. I learned what really great photography was, and I studied their work like mad. I went on to college where I continued to study all things photography. After graduation, I moved to Atlanta and began my career in this amazing industry.
So what do you love shooting most?
My preference has always been fashion. But in shooting over the years, I feel that I’ve developed a consistency in my overall style, and that’s been really exciting to translate into other arenas. Take housewares and beauty—I love approaching those the same way I do with fashion, so everything becomes exciting. I mean, at the end of the day my heart is with fashion, because that’s truly where I started. Buuuuuut, I love the freshness of a project that’s a little different. I can use my strengths and individual touch to make it totally my own.
How does the team you’re working with change the overall dynamic and results of your work?
You’ve gotta have collaboration and partnership—no question. So obviously a team that isn’t a two-way street can really bring you down. And I think it’s so helpful when everyone is realistic. Obviously everything isn’t always going to go completely according to plan. We’ve got to be flexible and leave windows open. You’re allowed to change your mind, you know? Luckily, you guys are so fun, adaptable, and easy to work with, and I’m always proud of the work we do together.
We love working with you too! So what do you think has been the best moment of your career?
Hmmm…it’d have to be my very first beauty job. I bid against some pretty high-profile beauty photographers to land this role. And I got it, and it was unreal. The job was with a big beauty company and the amazing Beyonce was the model. I was told I was the first female photographer to work with this company, so that was a big wow to me. And the fact that I got to work with Beyonce—how could you not freak out over that? It was a beautiful experience.
Last question. Any gossip or insider’s scoop you want to share with us?
Ha! I never kiss and tell.
