SHOES SAY A LOT ABOUT YOU. SAY SOMETHING GREAT.

#SAYSOMETHINGGREAT

15 photographers. 15 days. 182 people. 255 pairs of shoes. 250,000+ photos. Our spring campaign is all about how shoes have the power to bring out something great in everyone. That no matter who you are or how you dress, shoes can make you feel amazing. So, when you’re asked, “where’d you get YOUR shoes?” tell them those three little letters they should already know—DSW.

Want your pic posted right here? Just tell us your story on Instagram using #SaySomethingGreat for your chance to be featured.

Angelica Nelson

Freelance fashion stylist

Angelica is a freelance fashion stylist from New York, and has styled models for major fashion labels. “After styling models for years it was fun to get a taste of what it’s like to be a model. When they first showed me the shoes I’d be wearing, I was like ‘Oh, wow!’ But they looked awesome on and they’re extremely comfortable. Models don’t typically get to wear such comfortable shoes.”

Jeff Lipsky & Family

PHOTOGRAPHER

Jeff and Jill, and their kids Jake, Owen, and Olivia, are from California. Jeff is a photographer, but our spring campaign let him take a break from working behind the lens and step in front of the camera with the people he loves most.

Elizabeth Kokesh

Elizabeth was in the right place at the right time, which is how she happened to be in our spring commercial. She and a few friends were visiting Salvation Mountain in Southern California, and ran into our photo shoot crew. They chatted for a while, she tried on some of our spring shoes, and we captured some pictures. The result? An unlikely but perfect ending to a day of filming on a California landmark.

Rene Lopez

Musician

Rene is a Latin soul musician born and raised in the Bronx. His mother is Italian and his father was a Puerto Rican salsa musician. Rene spent his youth in salsa clubs where his father was performing, but also enjoyed rock, R&B, and hip-hop. His own musical career began with drums, but it was his discovery of Prince that led him to pick up a wider range of instruments and step up to the microphone. “I was a kid during the disco era, so my parents had epic dance parties in our living room. It just feels right to explore this kind of music right now. I can’t wait to go out and play these songs for people and, hopefully, make them all dance.”

Tressa Shaffer

Grandmother

This is Tressa, our friend Brad Shaffer’s grandmother. Brad helped us with our spring campaign, and he cast his grandma as one of our real-life models. One of the coolest things about Tressa? She loves Vans sneakers! She even had a pair on for the day of our shoot, so we photographed her wearing her very favorite kicks.

Kyle Brooks

Painter & folk artist

Kyle is a street-folk artist and illustrator from Georgia. He has been painting for fifteen years and got his start by creating street art outside of his day job, making pieces that he would hang up all over the city. When people would stop him to chat about his work, he was motivated to create more and began entering outdoor festivals and making murals and paintings. His work is colorful, energetic, whimsical—and can’t help but make you smile.

Tamara Spencer

Tamara ended up in our campaign after seeing an ad placed by one of our photographers, Eric. He was looking for stylish New Yorkers to appear in our photo shoot and she answered with a resounding yes. We’re glad she did.

Garrett Cornelison

Campaign photographer

Garrett is from Los Angeles. He was one of the 15 photographers we worked with for our spring photo shoot, and he helped cast many of the real people you see here. “Reaching out to people to photograph was kind of fun because generally when you shoot a big campaign like this, there’s creative directors, art directors, and stylists who are pushing their own personal look. This time, the models could come as they were and wear what they wanted.”

Emahn Ray

Set designer

Emahn is a set designer from New York—and he’s kind of what you’d call a “sneakerhead.” We asked him if he’d wear these kicks in real life, and his response? He already had them. "They kind of nailed it with the shoes. I saw the New Balance sneakers the photographer asked me to wear in the shot, and I was like, 'Oh, these are it? I actually wear something like these all the time!' It was awesome.

Jace was one of our campaign photographers. He’s from New York and although he loves to travel around the globe for his work, he finds plenty of inspiration right in his own backyard. “New York is such a creative space to be in, so a lot of inspiration comes from just biking around the city. Once I see something that my imagination runs with, I'll write it down and continue to refine the idea until I can create it visually.”

Joe Mansour

Aspiring musician & paparazzi photographer

Joe came to America to follow his dream of becoming a musician. Now, he’s not only a musician but a paparazzi photographer. Where fashion is concerned, he sees himself as “a walking patchwork of today’s world—a mix of different cultures.” Plus, he tells us he owns more jewelry than this wife. "I love the DSW shoes I wore at the shoot because they made me feel chic and I enjoy contrasting styles. I really like fashion but I will never follow trends. I'm too stubborn."

Guitar

Carter Lewis

Kid

Carter is from Charleston, South Carolina, and he absolutely loves playing basketball. He had a blast getting his picture taken for our campaign by photographer Jeff Holt—so much so that after he saw our commercial, he told his mom, “I love modeling, but you know what? Mr. Jeff got me on TV!”

Matthew Bolick

Coffee & craft beer shop owner

Matthew co-owns two Austin-based shops: Wright Bros. Brew & Brew, a bar serving up coffee, espresso, and 38 kinds of craft beer; and Flat Track Coffee, a pop-up coffee service and roasting company. He’s what you’d call an adventurous fellow—he’s also a musician and rides dirt bikes in his free time. So when our photographer Alexandra suggested filming him diving off of a bridge, he was on board. But it wasn’t easy to get the shot. First, they waited for a few boats to pass. Then, they had to wait for a few groups of people to cross the bridge. And they knew there was only one chance to capture the image perfectly. When the time was right, he jumped, and Alexandra took as many pictures as she could. We think the result is pretty amazing. (Please note: DSW does not condone bridge jumping. This was a carefully planned photograph, so please do not try this at home.)

Never Give Up

Douglas Oliver Smith

Artist

We didn’t plan for Douglas to be in our campaign, but we do love when happy accidents like this occur. Photographer Garrett Cornelison was driving to find his next location for our shoot, and pulled over when he was inspired by a mural outside of a house in Twentynine Palms, California. Before he took any pictures, he wanted the home owner’s permission, so he knocked on the door and met Douglas. The two became fast friends and Doug even let Garrett see his entire art studio, full of more colorful pieces like the mural. Plus, he let us have few photos of himself standing with his impressive artwork.

Nikki Lane

Country Singer

Nikki grew up in South Carolina listening to her mom’s Motown records, her dad’s country cassettes, and sneaking out to see alt-rock and punk shows whenever she could. All influences you’ll find in both her music and her personal style. She later picked up a guitar and set her sights on a country music career. Nikki eventually headed to Nashville where a chance meeting with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys turned into a full-fledged partnership. And the rest is history.
