Shoes say a lot about you. SAY SOMETHING GREAT.

#saysomethinggreat

15 photographers. 15 days. 182 people. 255 pairs of shoes. 250,000+ photos. Our spring campaign is all about how shoes have the power to bring out something great in everyone. That no matter who you are or how you dress, shoes can make you feel amazing. So, when you’re asked, “where’d you get YOUR shoes?” tell them those three little letters they should already know—DSW.

Tamara Spencer

Tamara ended up in our campaign after seeing an ad placed by one of our photographers, Eric. He was looking for stylish New Yorkers to appear in our photo shoot and she answered with a resounding yes. We’re glad she did.

Leslie Crow

Artist & leather worker

Leslie worked as a model and actress for 13 years before starting her own company, Heyoka Leather. She sells her pieces to retailers like Free People and Urban Outfitters and also takes custom orders for individual clients. When she’s not crafting custom leather goods, Leslie puts her creativity into metalworking. "My style is really classic and casual. I wear a lot of denim and old concert t-shirts with motorcycle boots, but I also like getting dressed up. The shoot was a lot of fun, just really authentic—us being ourselves and having fun."

Matthew Bolick

Coffee & craft beer shop owner

Matthew co-owns two Austin-based shops: Wright Bros. Brew & Brew, a bar serving up coffee, espresso, and 38 kinds of craft beer; and Flat Track Coffee, a pop-up coffee service and roasting company. He’s what you’d call an adventurous fellow—he’s also a musician and rides dirt bikes in his free time. So when our photographer Alexandra suggested filming him diving off of a bridge, he was on board. But it wasn’t easy to get the shot. First, they waited for a few boats to pass. Then, they had to wait for a few groups of people to cross the bridge. And they knew there was only one chance to capture the image perfectly. When the time was right, he jumped, and Alexandra took as many pictures as she could. We think the result is pretty amazing. (Please note: DSW does not condone bridge jumping. This was a carefully planned photograph, so please do not try this at home.)

Emahn Ray

Set designer

Emahn is a set designer from New York—and he’s kind of what you’d call a “sneakerhead.” We asked him if he’d wear these kicks in real life, and his response? He already had them. "They kind of nailed it with the shoes. I saw the New Balance sneakers the photographer asked me to wear in the shot, and I was like, 'Oh, these are it? I actually wear something like these all the time!' It was awesome.”

Erik Lang

Filmmaker

Be the Ball is the first documentary about golf and spirituality. Ever. And Erik directed it. He’s a filmmaker who got into golf about 5 years ago, which soon led to a fulltime career. Traveling the world interviewing golfers marries his two great loves, golf and filmmaking. Lucky guy. “Really had fun on the shoot. Got to play golf on my home course, had fun, AND played well.”

Nikki Lane

Country Singer

Nikki grew up in South Carolina listening to her mom’s Motown records, her dad’s country cassettes, and sneaking out to see alt-rock and punk shows whenever she could. All influences you’ll find in both her music and her personal style. She later picked up a guitar and set her sights on a country music career. Nikki eventually headed to Nashville where a chance meeting with Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys turned into a full-fledged partnership. And the rest is history.

Latoya Clement

Student

Student by day and bartender by night, Latoya is a big fan of Chuck Taylors. But she also loves to pair a wedge heel (Steve Madden is her favorite) with casual jeans or a little summer dress for a night out on the town with her girlfriends. “I have something like 6 pairs of Converse—they are my go-to shoes for sure. But when I’m not wearing Converse, I’m wearing 4-inch heels—from one extreme to the other."

Devante Powell

Aspiring break dancer

DeVante is from South Carolina, but he grew up in Germany (and he’s fluent in German). He taught himself to dance by watching YouTube videos, and even won his first break dancing competition this year. DeVante just graduated from high school and he aspires to be a professional break dancer one day.

Meghan Manning

Dancer

Meghan is a dancer from Pittsburgh, now living in New York. She’s classically trained in ballet, tap, jazz, and modern dance, which have served her well in her career (she’s danced in everything from kids’ shows to operas to music videos with artists like Wiz Khalifa). And if you’re a Brooklyn Nets fan, you’ll catch her at the next game, dancing on the sidelines as a Brooklynette.

Angel is a freight train conductor and a prominent community and urban renewal advocate in Atlanta. The two projects he’s most passionate about are the Atlanta Beltline—a transformational project that is turning an historic rail corridor into multi-use trails and greenspace—and Trees Atlanta, an organization that is dedicated to protecting Atlanta’s urban forest. When he’s not on the train, he bikes 20 miles a day just to keep an eye on everything happening around the city. “I’ve taken the energy and passion that I’ve learned from the world and brought it home to Atlanta.”

Kyle Brooks

Painter & folk artist

Kyle is a street-folk artist and illustrator from Georgia. He has been painting for fifteen years and got his start by creating street art outside of his day job, making pieces that he would hang up all over the city. When people would stop him to chat about his work, he was motivated to create more and began entering outdoor festivals and making murals and paintings. His work is colorful, energetic, whimsical—and can’t help but make you smile.

Amber Kekich

Founder of AGAIN collection

Amber got started as a denim designer in LA about 4 years ago. But she really wanted to do a collection so she started her own thing for modern day women. Together with Eleanor, her marketing and PR manager, the AGAIN Collection has become a reality. And with tons of wild prints and interesting textures it’s definitely for the bold at heart. “We are huge fans of mixing prints, and being bold. We say go for it.”

Joe Mansour

Aspiring musician & paparazzi photographer

Joe came to America to follow his dream of becoming a musician. Now, he’s not only a musician but a paparazzi photographer. Where fashion is concerned, he sees himself as “a walking patchwork of today’s world—a mix of different cultures.” Plus, he tells us he owns more jewelry than this wife. "I love the DSW shoes I wore at the shoot because they made me feel chic and I enjoy contrasting styles. I really like fashion but I will never follow trends. I'm too stubborn."

Since then, he has worked on hundreds of movies including Fast and Furious, Iron Man, and Captain America II. In addition to his wide range of stunt work, Oakley is a stunt coordinator and 2nd unit director. “Such a cool family, so welcoming and their space gave me so much to photograph—dogs, the Airstream, and that great house. But the best for me was the motorcycle smooch, hands down. It was such a special moment.”—Kevin Zacher, photographer

Elizabeth Kokesh

Elizabeth was in the right place at the right time, which is how she happened to be in our spring commercial. She and a few friends were visiting Salvation Mountain in Southern California, and ran into our photo shoot crew. They chatted for a while, she tried on some of our spring shoes, and we captured some pictures. The result? An unlikely but perfect ending to a day of filming on a California landmark.
