Una Vida de Scarpe: The Mercanti Fiorentini Story
March 05, 2014

One of our all-time favorite DSW-exclusive brands? Mercanti Fiorentini. The rich Italian history, the extensive traditional process—there’s so much passion and expertise behind Mercanti, we knew our Shoe Lovers needed a behind-the-scenes look. So dive into Mercanti Fiorentini—it’s definitely gonna blow you away.

In the years after WWI, Mercanti Fiorentini (Merchant of Florence) began traveling across the Italian countryside to sell his tailored shoes. In the mid-1960s, he sold what had become a flourishing business to new partners, including his son, who would continue to build the Mercanti Fiorentini brand.

Today, these same partners and their children are still working in the factory. They carry on the legacy of their founder with passion, dedication, and a collection inspired by the exceptional Mercanti Fiorentini.

IT BEGINS WITH A SKETCH

We bring new ideas and inspiration to each shoe. Our thoughts come to life with the first sketch.

EVERY PIECE MATTERS

We handpick each material needed to make the shoe—leather, soles, socks, and much more.

PRE-PRODUCTION: PREPARING THE MATERIALS

Leather is cut by hand and stitched, then holes are bored for shoelaces and the sole is painted and stamped.

PRODUCTION: BUILDING THE SHOE

The shoe comes together—the upper, the insole, and sole are attached.

THE FINISHING TOUCHES

After the shoe is assembled, we finish the leather by hand, and the shoe is finally ready for packaging.

FINALLY, THE MASTERPIECE
